Text Adventure Games

A long time ago, 12 years if the file timestamps are to be believed I was fiddling around a bit with making an inflation-themed text-based adventure game (or “interactive fiction” as it’s apparently called these days). I checked out the various development systems available at the time. I decided to see what I could do with TADS.

User Registration Back Online

Let's hope the spammers don't evolve too quickly.

New User Registration Temporarily Offline

Keywords:

I've disabled the creation of new user accounts due to an issue with the spam filter. I'll re-enable it once I've got the problem worked out.

Story Stats

I recently noticed that the Library now has over a thousand stories in it. We actually hit that milestone back in January.

Congratulations to the community and thank you to all of the authors who have contributed over the years.

Of course I did what I usually due when presented with a large data set. I crunched some numbers.

Spam

Keywords:

One thing that completely blindsided me when I switched the site to Drupal was the spam problem. I never needed an anti-spam system when I used CPG-Nuke. It was rare enough that I could handle it manually.

Within a week of the site revamp, I was seeing about 50 fake user registrations per day. I installed the Mollom module for Drupal, and it's been a lifesaver. Yesterday it blocked over 700 spam attempts.

Back Online

New server is online.

There will probably be some hiccups over the next week or so as I go about fixing some minor issues with the switchover, but it looks like the important stuff is all running properly.

Temporarily Back Online

On Tuesday, the BodyInflation.org server crashed. After some investigation, I determined that it was most likely a dead motherboard. I ordered a replacement, but for reasons unknown it appears to be delayed.

Right now the sites running off of some spare hardware I've cobbled together. I don't know if this will work as a near-term solution, but I figure it's better than being completely offline.

Expect sporadic downtime until I can work out a permanent solution.

Upcoming Downtime

Keywords:

At some point today the site will be going offline. Please don't panic, it shouldn't be down for long.

New Terms and Conditions

Keywords:

Actually, they're not new. They're identical to the terms that were displayed on the old site. Only your senile old webmaster didn't have the registration agreement properly enabled when the new site went live. So I've installed a new module that makes sure everyone has agreed to the terms, since there's a good chance that people who have registered in the past year haven't. Don't worry, you only have to do it once. Then it's back to business as usual.
