It's a challenging question...I'm drawing a blank how to tie it into air or helium (unless you co-date it with the Macy's parade, with all of the balloons)...
As for slayer's suggestion...Willy Wonka (the original, not the 2005 remake) was released on June 30, 1971. The book came out sometime in 1964 I think, but no specific date.
I tried to find an attributable date to the invention of the first effective air pump, but could only find a year reference (1657 for Otto von Guericke’s air-pump, and 1658 for Robert Hooke's English adaptation for Robert Boyle)...maybe further research there could prove worthwhile...

If Luther knows it then the creation of this site would work. Timing it with a parade in New York would make it seem like an American thing, and relating it to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in any way would make it seem more of a blueberry thing rather than a general inflation thing.
How about the 8th of August. 8/8 inflated looking numbers, and how you say it doesn't depend on whether you say d/m or m/d

I'm with mearsob on this one. While it doesn't mark the birth of the fetish, it was often the place that first really gave acceptance regarding the concept for many people, which I think is more important than when a chemical was found. Why don't we make a poll though, so we have a more empirical opinion?

While the exact date is a bit murky since I'm working from memory, I consider this site's birthdate to be December 27, 1996. Unfortunately that's right between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
What can I say? I was on winter break, and I had some time on my hands.
I'm with Inflate123 on this one. August is a month with no major holidays. And while helium may not be essential to inflationism, it certainly lives in a place near and dear to my heart.

But there was another site before this one. One called inflate 123 or something in 1994...or 95?
I thought it was the same owner of that site who started this one?
The Inflate 123 channel was something very special to me, because I found out I was not alone in this fetish. Until that point I thought I was utter weird and I was so glad I found that channel. Maybe the birth-date of that channel should be our anniversary? Since it brought the fetish together plus many other things

It might not surprise you to know that this 'Inflate 123' website you speak of was run by Inflate123 (see above posts). BI.org always seemed like the home of inflation to me, and was actually the first inflation site I discovered.

Yeah, I had what I called "a billboard site" -- just a sort of welcome mat that explained some of the basics of the fetishes and where to find more information on the subcultures -- along with a Video Vault full of low-res video clips of inflation scenes. I have no idea when I actually started that site, but it's kind of you to think that was important enough to be in the running for this! :)
