Funny, I've heard several people cite MJ but I saw the film today, really enjoyed it, but never got the MJ vibe. Maybe Michael Jackson is simply the modern shorthand for "loner eccentric."

I read a newspaper article that had some comments form Depp. They actually asked if he played his character somewhat off MJ, and he said that he never even thought of MJ during the shooting and had no intention of trying to act like him.

Exceelent film allround Depp was fantastic he was more of a cross between Ed Wood and Howard Hughes insteed of Micheal Jackson. Great Violet transformation scene which is officaly my number two favoriot transformation scene of all time. Great set dissighn and a great score from Danny Elfman. Thank you Tim Burton for making today sweet.

Danny Elfman was great as always, and I enjoyed the movie overall. The childhood background from Wonka was funny, and sort of added something else in a new version. I didn't like the violet scene, didn't even like the first one that much. Aside from my fetish, it was funny and fits to what the story tries to say, but I didn't like the CG. It wasn't the girl inflating I felt, but something else, u know? Incorporating CG in movies hasn't been perfected in my opinion, it's still too cartoony and out of place at times. She got so friggin huge, it weirded me out a bit lol. Although I remember the first months i found this fetish was on the internet, and sawing the pictures section years ago i really didn't have preferences and enjoyed that kinda inflation, so in that perspective it was fine.

I can't wait to see the movie, it looks great!
Saw it last night at a special advance screening.
Overal review: I loved it. I'm a fan of both the book and the original movie, and this version is a lot closer to the book. They did add some stuff (like Wonka's childhood background), and the ending is different, however.
Depp plays Wonka as a pseudo-Michael Jackson. Does a great job (duh).
The best part of the movie had to be the songs. The Oompah-loompa song lyrics are the original ones from the book, with music by Danny Elfman putting them in different genres (salsa, rock, 60's groove...).
As for the scene you're all wondeirng about: Yes, Violet inflates. Big. HUGE. Her cheeks puff out as she grows, but you don't really see her hands or feet wiggling. Plus she gets used as a prop in the musical number.
Yes, it's a little fast, and yes it's really obvious CG. In fact, it's the first real CG shot of the movie. But it's still done well.
Overall: I give the movie an 8 out of 10. I didn't really need Wonka's childhood background, and the pacing felt kinda weird at times, but it's still worth $10 of your money.
