Game Idea Prototype Looking for Feedback

Salutations all!

I've been toying with this idea for the last few hours and wanted to get some opinions of the game concept before refining it or trimming away unnecessary additions. The general idea was to create a relatively simple competitive expansion-themed game that can just as easily be set up and played. It is intended to be played by multiple players but may be played solo by controlling all the avatars.

Necessary materials:

  • Tokens for player Avatars
    • Something the player(s) can use to keep track of their position on the board.
  • Paper and pencil
    • To keep track of the Avatar's EP values (EP explained below).
  • Standard 6-sided die.
    • For movement across the board.
  •  "Board"
    • Can be made from paper scraps, stones, etc. Something to indicate "spaces" and a start/finish line. Preferably made up with multiple lanes for movement.
  •  Tiles
    • Something that acts as "Tiles" (three different types) throughout each lane of the board. Requires Trap Tiles, Asset Tiles, and Jester Tiles. (See below for more information).

The goal of the game is reach the finish line with the highest number of Expansion Points (this will be referred to as "EP").

Each player's avatar starts off with an EP value of 0 and can expand themselves to a maximum value of 20 EP. If their number of EP exceeds 20 the avatar will "Pop" and must return back to the start or the nearest checkpoint along their choosen path (player's choice). Avatars cannot reach an EP value less than 0. The player must try and maintain a high EP value while facing the risk of "Popping".

The board itself is divided up into several branching paths with differing numbers of spaces to reach the finish. Rigged throughout the map are numerous "Trap Tiles", "Asset Tiles", and "Jester Tiles". A "Trap Tile" will either increase or decrease an avatar's EP value depending on it's effect. Trap Tile values can differentiate from any number between -4 to +4. An "Asset Tile" allows the avatar to attack another player's avatar offensively with their EP value. "Jester Tiles" can be any change that doesn't effect a player avatar's EP value. They can force the player to return the nearest checkpoint/start, move back several spaces, move forward several spaces, reroll their die, and so on. Jester Tiles are an enigma that will either help or sabotage a player's progress.

Eg. Trap Tile

The player's avatar lands on a Trap Tile with a +1 value. The player's avatar gains 1 EP.

If the tile was -1, the avatar loses 1 EP.

If a player's EP value is less than that of the Trap Tile's value (avatar value of 2 EP and the Trap Tile is -3) the avatar's value cannot drop lower than 0 EP. If the avatar has 0 EP and lands on a Trap Tile with a negative value, the trap has no effect.

Eg. Asset Tile

The player's avatar lands on an Asset Tile. The player will have three choices:

  1. Gain 1 EP by taking it away from a chosen opponent's avatar.
    1. (NOTE: EP cannot be taken from opponent's avatars with a value of 0 EP)
      1. Player gains 1 EP, chosen opponent loses 1 EP.
  2. Lose 1 EP by forcing it onto a chosen opponent's avatar.
    1. (NOTE: EP cannot be given to an opponent if the player's avatar has a value of 0 EP)
      1. Player loses 1 EP, chosen opponent gains 1 EP.
  3. Player chooses to sacrifice their next turn with no effect on their EP and cannot be choosen by an opponent for that turn.
      1. Player cannot move for 1 turn and opponent's Asset Tiles have no effect on that player's avatar.

Once a player's avatar reaches the finish, they cannot act further. Once all the avatars reach the end, the avatar with the highest EP value is declared the winner. If two avatar's with the highest value are the same, the first of the two avatars to have reached the finish is the winner.

As I said, a simplistic game that shouldn't take up too much time. I would like to digitalize the idea for greater ease of access, but for now a physical tabletop idea should suffice for now. Progress is being made on templates for the board and avatars. I'll be sure to share them once they are completed.

Many thanks for the your time and I wish all a wonderful evening,

This sounds like a fun and wonderful game, well thought out too.

Thanks! Any suggestions or concerns?

A forum adaptation would be cool, so that it can be playtested here

That's a good idea Lopni. I've never tried a forum-based game but I'll see what I can do. :)
